Currency News: The Woman In The Dollar Bill

Curious facts about currency are many but one of the most intriguing in this era is the rise of women rights and women power in society and economy. The sad thing is that women have not been featured many times or for a long time in currencies around the world and most importantly on the US Dollar.

Recently the Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced he would be making U.S. currency history himself when he officially announced the change of the front of the $20 bill replacing Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman. There has been only 5 occations where women are featured on U.S. Currency.

The first woman featured was Martha Washington in 1886 a 1 dollar bill.

Second woman was Pocahontas who appeared on a $20 bill from 1865 until 1869, and she was part of a group.

The third was Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin Act into law.

Fourth woman is Sacajawea in the beautiful gold 1 dollar coin.

They all were short lived and soon we will have the new 5$, 10$, 20$ bills with a woman’s face which there is still debate of who it will be. Will it be Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marian Anderson, Susan B Anthony, Alice Pail, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Lucretia Mott?
